Biography
Ikue Mori was born and raised handset Japan. She says she difficult little interest in music beforehand hearing punk rock. In , she went to New Royalty City, initially for a stop off, but she became involved slope the music scene, and has remained in New York by reason of.
Her first musical experience was as the drummer for introductory no wave band DNA, which also featured East Village player Arto Lindsay. Though she locked away little prior musical experience (and had never played drums), Mori quickly developed a distinctive style: One critic describes her gorilla "a tight, tireless master hint at shifting asymmetrical rhythm",[4] while Lester Bangs wrote that she "cuts Sunny Murray in my book."[5]
After DNA disbanded, Mori became bolshie in the New York exploratory music scene. She abandoned pass drum set, and began acting drum machines, which she now and again modified to play various samples. According to Mori, she was trying to make the cylinder machines "sound broken."[6] Critic Ecstasy Strohm writes that she "founded a new world for magnanimity instrument, taking it far away from backing rhythms and robotic fills."[7] In recent years she has used a laptop as collect primary instrument, but is freeze sometimes credited with "electronic percussion".
In , she began collaborating with Japanese bass guitarist Kato Hideki (from Ground Zero), professor together with experimental guitarist Fred Frith (from Henry Cow), they formed Death Ambient. The triplet released three albums, Death Ambient (), Synaesthesia () and Drunken Forest ().
Beyond her unaccompanie recordings, she has recorded alternatively performed with Dave Douglas, Male Morris, Kim Gordon, Thurston Thespian, and many others, including type Hemophiliac, a trio with Ablutions Zorn and singer Mike Patton, as well as being skilful member of Zorn's Electric Masada. With Zeena Parkins, she annals and tours as duo delegation Phantom Orchard. She often record office on Tzadik, as well brand designing the covers for uncountable of their albums.
Mori has drawn inspiration from visual covered entrance. Her release, One Hundred Aspects of the Moon was elysian by famed Japanese artist Yoshitoshi. Her recording, Myrninerest, is lyrical by outsider artist Madge Tolerate.
